Call for Papers: 16th Triennial Conference

The Church History Association of India will be organizing the 16th CHAI Triennial Conference in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. The theme of the conference is “Peoples’ History: Christianity, Culture and Development”. Read an explanation of the conference theme here.

Conference Program

The sessions of the Conference will start in the forenoon of October 30, 2021 (Thursday) and will close by the evening of November 1, 2021 (Saturday).

On November 2nd (Sunday) morning there will be a special Worship and Mission Festival of one of our partner churches, the Gossner Evangelical Lutheran (GEL) Church, for which the delegates of the Triennial are also invited. The details of the Inaugural Session, the academic sessions, the Valedictory, etc. will be sent to you by the Coördinators by email once you register for participation.

You may definitively respond to this invitation by sending the duly filled up Registration Form (included) or send a preliminary response expressing your intention to participate/present paper. You may kindly note that the Programme of the Triennial includes the General Body Meeting of CHAI.

Travel Arrangements

Member-delegates and other participants at the Triennial will have to make onward and return travel arrangements on their own. Kindly note that there are direct train connections from Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, Jammu Tawi, Kolkata, Allepey (Kerala), Hyderabad, Allahabad, Varanasi, Chandigarh, Jabalpur(weekly), Guwahati(bi-weekly). The venue is just 4 kms from Ranchi Railway station and hardly 8 kms Hatia Railway station. Flights land at the Birsa Munda Airport with connections from most major centres or via Delhi/Kolkata. The venue is hardly 8 kms from Birsa Munda Airport. If arrival details are informed early, arrangements can be made to receive from the railway station/airport. Travel expense is to be met by individual delegates or the institutions which depute them. Travel fare to paper presenters only (three times sleeper class train fare or bus fare) would be reimbursed by the organizers.

Registration

All member-delegates and other participants will have to register in the prescribed Registration Form (given below). Please fill up the Form and send it by postal mail or scanned copy by email (preferred) to the CHAI 16th Triennial Coördinator, Rev. Registration/Delegate Fee

The Registration Fee for the Conference is Rs 500/-. Student participants may register at a reduced rate of Rs 300/- together with a copy of their student id and sponsoring institution’s letter. The Registration Fee will include shared accommodation, food, and conference materials.

Payment of the Registration Fee can be made through DD/cheque. Outstation members may send the amount by Demand Draft or Cheque in favour of “CHAI Eastern India Branch” payable at Ranchi latest by September 5, 2021. Please note that the Registration Fee is non-refundable. You can also electronically transfer the amount in the CHAI EASTERN INDIA BRANCH Account No. 156301000002793 in Indian Overseas Bank at Club Road, Ranchi (Branch code IOBN1563). Please email Dr. S.C. Canton at <[email protected]> immediately after the money transfer with all the details.

Even if you pay the Registration Fee at a date later than this or latest on arrival by cash (if so, please indicate), you need to send a scanned copy of the duly filled up Registration Form, indicating your proposed participation (with or without presenting papers), so that adequate arrangements can be made for your accommodation.

Accommodation

Accommodation and hospitality will be arranged for the delegates by the CHAI Eastern India Branch during the period of the Triennial. Further, accommodation will also be arranged for those coming in earlier (from the evening of October 29th) and for those attending the Mission Festival (till the forenoon of November 2nd, 2014): please indicate the timing of your arrival/departure in the Registration Form.

Shared accommodation at the same location as the Conference is available. Members are requested not to bring non-participating delegates (family/travel partners) as the host is not able to provide accommodation to the latter. The weather is generally pleasant during late October but you may require light warm clothes.

Papers

The detailed Call for Papers together with the Concept note, sub-themes and deadlines were published in the December 2013 issue of ICHR. This is again published in the June 2014 issue of ICHR.

Since CHAI Triennial is being held in Chotanagpur region for the first time, special focus will be on the Chotanagpur Church.

The Abstract should be thematically focused and must contain the main points of your paper. The abstracts sent within the prescribed time will be included in the Conference folder/Souvenir and would get preference in the presentation which would be around 30 minutes (including discussion). The length of the Paper should be between 4000 – 6000 words and should be submitted digitally in Microsoft Word format in the Chicago Manual of Style (15th edition). Travel fare to paper presenters (three times sleeper class train fare or bus fare) would be reimbursed by the organizers.

The Final Paper should reach on or before September 30, 2021. Please encourage as many of your colleagues as possible to present Papers. As an academic body, CHAI would expect unpublished Papers having certain professional standards, using historical methodologies.
